PlayStation 1 consoles are both region locked and unable to play backup games (burnt in disc media like C D-R). However these limitations can by bympassed by installing a modchip that circunvents the stock protections of the console. While there are multiple type of modchips for the PS1, the Mayumi v4 is one of the most inexpensive and popular ones and works for the majority of PS1 revisions.

For some history of PS1 modchips and the various options you have to mod your console, you can check this webpage. For the Mayumi v4 specifically (the modchip sold in this listing), here you can find a comprehensive compatibility list of PS1 revisions that work with it, but in summary, you can use this modchip if you have one of the following board revisions:

  • PU-18 (SCPH-5001 to 5552)
  • PU-20 (SCPH-7000 to 7003)
  • PU-22 (SCPH-7500 to 7503)
  • PU-23 (SCPH-9000 to 9003)
  • PM-41 (SCPH-100 to 103)

We will add other revisions of the console in future listings.

Please note that PS1 consoles for different regions were designed with slightly different clock speeds and standards (50Hz for PAL and 60Hx for NTSC). As a consequence a modded PS1 PAL console playing NTSC games will likely not display the right video colours when using the stock composite or RF cables. To solve this, you can either use a SCART RGB cable or install a Dual Frequency Oscillator mod (DFO or MOFO) in addition to the modchip. You can find DFO or MOFO chips in various online shops, such as in Consoles Unleashed.

This PCB has been designed by Eduart Misiraj and assembled by me 🙂
