Order #3839 and #4043

This order was for a recap, Triple Bypass and DFO region mod for a Japanese MK1 Sega MegaDrive

The console was japanese import in relatively good condition externally. The first job was to disassemble the consoles and proceed with the recapping. For this particular console I could not find an existing capacitor map, so I I also created one.

The second job was to install a Triple Bypass. This console doesn’t have an RF module so the mini DIN connector needs to be installed instead of the stock DIN connector. First thing then is to remove the existing connector, and then install a support PCB that let’s you solder the mini din (upside down, as is the norm with these installations)

Then we need to take the RGB signal from the main chip, using a separate board provided with the kit, which makes it all more tidy and easy.

The next step is to install the actual TBP board on top of the mini DIN connector, and solder all the cables to 5V, Ground, Sync, RGB and Audio

The final mod is a DFO region-free mod. This replaces the onboard clock, and connects to the jumpers that control the region, and to the reset button, which is used to change region (press for around 1s to change region). The mod requires to cut a few traces to be able to control the region and the clock. It also installs a new LED light which changes colour with the region (red, green and blue).

Final test before assembly. Note however that due to brittleness (common in old consoles depending on how they have been stored), some of the post were broken on arrival. I glued and reinforced the most important one on the cart slot with epoxy putty, and used alternative screws for the rest. The motherboard should be safe and secured now

I also cleaned and applied some plastic enhancer to the outside of the console. All done!
