The service was for an OG Xbox Refurbishment and modding, with a 1TB used HDD. The console was in a good condition externally, with a working DVD drive. On disassembly, the security stickers were preserved as much as possible by removing them with hot air. The consoles internally was quite clean. with minimum visible rust
Upon disassembly, the brittleness of the front panel was noticed. The front panel needs to be prayed off with considerable force as it is held with plastic tabs. If the plastic is brittle (not too common on these consoles), the plastic is prone to breaking, which is exactly what happened in this occasion. Without taking the front panel off, the console cannot be cleaned with water as the front panel contains the PCB for the buttons.
Fortunately a replacement was at hand and the broken front panel was swapped with an intact one. There should be no noticeable difference with the new front panel.
On removing the shield from the shell, rust was found under the protective sheet for the PSU. All the components, including the new front panel, were washed with water and soap. The fan was also dusty and it was cleaned
Working on the motherboard, the thermal paste was cleaned and replaced with new one, and the CPU capacitors were changed. The CPU capacitor was also removed, which was found slightly leaking but not enough to cause damage in the motherboard
Then the LPC port was rebuilt and header pins were installed. This is to support the modchip installation.
The DVD drive was also opened up and cleaned, and new lubrication added to the rails and gears, even if the condition inside was good. The rust under the PSU was sanded off and protected with Kapton tape, which will hopefully prevent it from continuing to rust. The only permanent solution is to repaint the entire shield, but it is probably not worth with this little amount to rust.
A 1TB Western Digital used HDD was repartitioned and installed. The customer asked for UIX Lite to be installed as the main dashboard. The HDD has other dashboards, including XBMC4Gamers. Which dashboad boots can be selected by changing Cerbios.ini (care must be taken to put a valid path or the console will not boot).
The console jewel got a polish even if it was already in good condition. Plastic enhancer was added to the black parts of the shell.
The customer also requested refurbishing of two controllers and a light gun. Upon inspection, and opening up of one of the controllers, it was not found that they were dirty enough to require a refurbishment. The controllers and the gun were cleaned externally with IPA and a microfiber cloth as well as cotton buds for difficult to reach areas.
