Order #4774

The service was for a recap, IPS screen installation, glass lens install and battery mod for a V0 Sega Game Gear. The IPS screen was a BennVenn screen sourced from ZedLabz, and the glass lens and the battery mod were sourced from RetroSix.

The console came with a non functional screen but with power. First step as agreed with the customer was to do a recap. Changing the capacitors of the main PC made the screen come back to life, but with no sound. The pictures show a reasonable amount of corrosion around the board with the no major problems. Replacing the caps for the power board and the sound board made the console work again with sound

With the console working, the next step was to replace the screen for the IPS one. The first step is to remove the backlight, screen and inductor. The screen ribbon cable was removed with some hot air so it is undamaged. Also an internal post had to be removed which will get in the way of the new screen.

Next step was to install the new ribbon cable for the new screen. This also requires connecting the buttons which allow for video settings in the new screen once is installed.

Once the ribbon cable is installed in one side, the PCB is flipped and the new screen is put in place with the included 3D bracket and using the original screws. Once the screen is in place, the ribbon is then soldered to all the points in the screen panel, but also a couple fo points in the main console PCB

The new glass lens was replaced by removing the old one with hot air, cleaning up the old glue and applying the new lens. The metal shield metal fingers also had to be trimmed so that they don’t interfere with the new screen

For the battery mod, the new PCB fits into the same space as the old one. However the battery installation requires trimming of some of the plastic around the internal battery compartment to ensure the new battery packs fit. The old battery cables and some of the metal connectors also had to be removed.

This console has a modded blue LED (stocks are always red). This meant that on replacement of the battery, the new LED was really bright. I installed a round diffuser paper to make the light more bearable to the eyes.
