PS1 modchip and Dual Frequency Oscillator installation

What do you get with this service?

The following choices are available:

• The installation of a  PS1 modchip into your PlayStation console. This will allow you to play any region and backup games (i.e. burnt to disc media like CD-R) in your console. We will also provide our own Mayumi v4 modchip as part of this service at no additional cost if you do not provide your own.
• The installation of a Dual Frequency Oscillator provided by you. We recommend Consoles Unleashed DFO, MFO or MOFO depending on your needs. Please see more information  below.

Why you might need  a Dual Frequency Oscillator or an RGB SCART cable

PS1 consoles for different regions were designed with slightly different clock speeds and standards (50Hz for PAL and 60Hz for NTSC). The frequency to be used when playing a game is determined by the game itself. As a consequence a modded PS1 playing different region games will likely not display the right video colours when using the stock composite because the colour subcarrier of the video encoder is derived from the GPU clock (which as mentioned above, depends on the region hardware). To solve this, you can either:

• Use RGB. You can buy RGB SCART cables in this (and other) websites. This will not solve game speed / frames per second issues (only video colour subcarrier issues), but this might be more or less important depending on your console revision, your TV set and the games you wish you play.
• Install a Dual Frequency Oscillator (DFO) mod in addition to the modchip. This will solve any composite video issues just like RGB, but will also solve any speed and fps issues. You can find DFO or other variants like Multi Output Frequency Oscillators chips in various online shops, such as in Consoles Unleashed. Please check their github repository information for more details and for which mod is recommended for which console revision, or contact us and we will be happy to help.

What you don’t get with this service

This is not a repair service. Please ensure your system is fully functional as stated in our Terms and Conditions, or contact us before purchasing the service if unsure what will be covered.

We do not sell DFO chips ourselves. We recommend Consoles Unleashed products. Please check the information above or send us an email to determine which mod would be more suitable for your case.

We will test your console with our own composite and/or SCART RGB cables, both for imported and burnt games, but will not provide these to you as part of the service.

Shipping

You are responsible for shipping the system in adequate packaging to our address. An email will be sent to you after purchase with some suggestions about how to do this as well as shipping details. The cost of you shipping your system to us is not included in the price of the service.

The shipping we do charge for this service is to send the console back to you when the service is finished. To the extent possible, we will use the same packaging material you used to send the system to us in the first place. We will replace packaging material if it is damaged when we receive it at no cost to you.
