Order #6589

This order was for the installation of a Modbo 5.0 modchip in a fat PS2, as well as a Pic Fix. The customer also asked for the installation of a new laser, which was also shipped with the console.

The installation of the modchip went well. Tests confirmed that the console can boot both PAL and NTSC PS2 (DVD) and PS1 games.

Following the installation of the modchip and tests, was time for the PicFix. The console was a V9, so the resistor value for point J needs to be 2K. However the customer sent a modchip with a installed SMD 1.5K, which is not suitable. So I used a different chip I had which requires installing a separate resistor, and I sued a 2k resistor

More tests confirmed the consoles still worked as intended. Below Valkyrie Profile (japanese, PS2), Resident Evil outbreak (PAL, PS2), and Dragon Quest VII (japanese, PS1)

One the console was proved to work, the last was swapped with the one provided by the customer. First observation is that the laser wasn’t a new one, as the solder blob for anti-static protection was not there. This means is probably a laser pulled out from a console.

Unfortunately, the “new” laser didn’t work. When booting up the console with it, the console would turn off when attempting to read a disc. Probably this is a faulty laser with a some kind of short circuit inside. I then put back the “old” laser, while cleaning and lubricating the mechanism. As shown earlier, the laser can still read discs, although it does fail with some scratched discs.
